Belated Christmas

It's the last day of the year and I wish everyone a belated Christmas. I  would have updated last week, but I was away from my scanner.

For all your troubles here is a picture of Santa Claus that I drew over Christmas.  I used mostly a fat tip Sharpie to draw him and the houses.  I then used the Flair Papermate medium tip pen to do a little bit of detail on Santa's face.

I will see you guys next year!

Movie Madness!!! 7

"Oh, it was glorious..."

"A Christmas Story" (1983) is a holiday classic.  If you have never seen it, it is pretty much following the holiday-themed hijinks of a kid going through the month of December leading up to Christmas.  The entire way, he dreams of getting a Red Ryder BB gun for his Christmas gift.

It is a perfect encapsulation of how kids feel during Christmas time when they long after the perfect toy.  I love it and try to catch every Christmas.  It also features a hilarious, racist scene making fun of Chinese people.

This picture was drawn in all Sharpie marker to give it bold outlines.  The greys were drawn with a dried up marker.

Nightwing is the original Robin (of "Batman and Robin" fame), who is all grown up and now has his own costume identity. This character is so fun to draw because you can pose a super agile, athletic figure in extreme new ways, but at the same time, be a little bit like Batman.

Like my Wonder Woman picture, Nightwing is drawn in a blue ballpoint pen initially, but then I drew over it with a black Papermate flair pen and Sharpie marker.  I also took this as an exercise to draw a cityscape in the background.  I normally don't draw buildings because I hate drawing it. But here, I am trying something new, where I draw only the shadows of the buildings.  It actually turned out really well.

Wonder Woman

So if you haven't heard, Hollywood casted an actress to play Wonder Woman in the upcoming Man of Steel  sequel.  Gal Gadot of the Fast and Furious  movies is set to play her.  I am of two minds of this.  First, it's great that they are trying to make a live action Wonder Woman, even if it is really Superman's movie.  On the other hand, it is still a Superman movie, and there are a billion things that are already jammed pack in there including, but not limited to: Batman, the Daily Planet, the Clark Kent identity, Lex Luthor, and whatever other villains there are in the movie.  It is a lot of stuff for one movie.

Switching gears slightly, I drew this in actually only a blue ballpoint pen.  But I ended up liking the drawing so much that I then traced it over with a Papermate Flair medium size pen and then blacked out large portions of the paper with a fat tip Sharpie.  To give it a more interesting pop, I used a White Out pen to draw the bullet lines.  Finally, I scanned it and used Microsoft Paint to erase most of the sketch lines on her body and face.

King Kong

One reason why I don't draw animals often is because I hate drawing fur.  It is really challenging to get the light reflecting off the fur perfectly where there is good texture.  Also, when you do figure out how to draw the fur, it is very time consuming.

However, this drawing of King Kong beating on a dinosaur gave me an excuse to stretch my drawing muscles a little.  I love the original King Kong ride on the Universal Tram Tour ride.  It was super intense for a giant animatronic.  And the current King Kong part of the Universal Tram Tour ride is pretty crazy too.

I drew this all with a ball point pen.  As crazy as it sounds, you don't always need fancy drawing equipment to make a good picture.  It is more how you use the tools.

Adventure Time Abbey Road Revisted

Here is an update of an older post.  A few weeks ago I posted a picture of the Adventure Time cast (Finn, Jake, Princess Bubblegum, BMO, and Marceline) doing an imitation of the Beatles' Abbey Road Cover.  The picture was my T-shirt design submission for WeLovefine.com.  Now I am here with the colored design.

First, here is the initial design that I posted earlier in its black and white glory.

Next, the picture is uploaded onto Photoshop so it can be colored.  You can see the Ice King's mountain castle being colored in the background.

Here is the mountain being colored in more.  Also, Photoshop is useful for getting rid of details that I don't like, such as an extra cloud or Marceline's right foot.

And finally, the completed picture and T-Shirt design as seen at Welovefine.com.

Welovefine.com is currently holding the different designs to be judged and rated by the public.  If you feel so inclined to rate my design, it is on page 30 of the rating page.  A special thanks for Sherry Yuen for coloring the drawing for me.

Doctor Octopus

Doctor Octopus is probably my favorite Spider-Man villain.  He is so arrogant and full of himself.  He is also a lot of fun to draw since he has those metal arms.

I am still deciding whether I like this drawing or not since his legs are disproportionate from his body.  I don't know if that ruined the picture or not.

I drew this with an ultra fine tipped Crayola marker.  I am still shocked that Crayola makes markers so thin.  I love them.

When I am supposed to be working 7

Top (L to R): Captain Universe, Captain Marvel, and Scarlet Witch
Bottom (L to R): Spider- Woman, Mocking Bird, Black Widow, and Wasp

I enjoy drawing girls.  However, drawing the female form is something that I (and most male artists) constantly struggle to do. This is a nice exercise in trying to draw different looking females with distinctive looks.  These are some of the most well known female members of the Avengers.

There is Captain Universe, a new super powerful character; Captain Marvel, a super strong, energy shooting Air Force pilot; Scarlet Witch, reality warping mutant, who is played by Elizabeth Olsen in the upcoming Avengers  sequel; Spider-Woman, no relation to Spider-Man; Mocking Bird, a bo staff wielding assassin; Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson, and finally, the Wasp, the female founding member of the Avengers.

This was done with a blue ball point pen.

Thor and Loki and Rap Music

So I have a strange guilty pleasure.  I like mash-ups of comic panels with rap music lyrics.  I think they are clever and funny.  Like a panel of.... I don't know.... Captain America and lyrics of Kanye West emblazoned on it like a meme.  I reused my picture of Thor and Loki from my "Random Thoughts on Thor: Dark World" post and added some lyrics to some of my favorite rap songs.
