Alien

One of my favorite movies of all time is "Aliens" (not to be mistaken for it's predecessor, "Alien").  It is actually a lot of fun drawing the gross, skeletal anatomy of a Xenomorph alien from the movie.

The main thing about this picture is that I am trying to practice good consistent lighting on the Xenomorph's shiny black exoskeleton by crosshatching the heck out of the figure.  My normal intuition is to just black out the Xenomorph's skin with a flat black marker and draw some squiggly lines to imply shininess.  Normally, that is a pain the butt for me to crosshatch that much, but the end result is that it makes the figure pop out and look much more realistic.

When I am supposed to be working...35

Welcome back to another edition of "When I am supposed to be working".  As of lately, I have been posting more of these fancy sketches and less of actual polished art pieces.  Unfortunately, I have been busier lately and barely have time to draw.  So I just have to post whatever it is that I draw at work or school (and occasionally church).

In case you were wondering, Kraven the Hunter is one of the oldest villains in Spider-Man's rogues gallery.  He is a master hunter and master of rocking out in ballerina shoes and leopard print pants.  Seriously, google what Kraven used to look like in the 60's.

Super Sketch...1

I think I will start a new feature on this site called "Super Sketch" where I show of random little sketches and doodles that I do in five minutes or less.

Despite the contrary, Spider-Man does not have two pairs of hands.  This is a good demonstration of how I initially thought certain body parts went in different places, but when I refined Spidey's anatomy, the hands were placed in a different area.

When I am supposed to be working...33

I was inspired by some fashion magazines recently so I wanted to try my hand in making an outfit.  I like it for the most part but I don't care for the way I drew the high heel shoes.

Thanos

"I will bathe the star ways with your blood..."
Ah yes, Thanos.  He first appeared in-of all places-an Iron Man comic and now he is destined to be the next villain in the third and fourth (!) Avengers movie.  Thanos is a powerful alien from the moon Titan.  What is also important about Thanos is that he a lover and collector of pretty jewelry and fancy gloves.

Anyhoot, this is my second stab at drawing Thanos half-sitting in his throne.  My first attempt was so ugly that I crumpled it up and threw it away.  This is my second and more refined attempt.  Speaking of refined, this picture is actually anything but.  I normally draw with with flatter blacks and more neat lines, but when I saw how my scanner displayed my scribbles, it made the picture more alive for me.  It gives off a good sense of organized messiness that implies that there is a lot of destruction all around Thanos.

When I am supposed to be working...34

So here is what I drew from work recently.  It is supposed to be Predator, but since I drew this at work, I actually don't remember exactly how he looks.  So there are some mistakes.  For example, I gave him nostrils when I realized that he has none.  Whoops.

College Comics 22

Here is another strip starring me.  I always liked how I drew the cartoon version of myself. Also, that is the cartoon version of my college roommate who I was living with at the time.

The last line "You figure it out.  I'm just the idea guy" was inspired from a Simpsons quote.

When I am supposed to be working...32

The Martian Manhunter has been a mainstay of the Justice League for a super long time.  In fact, up until maybe ten years ago, he has been a part of every roster of the Justice League since the beginning.  That's right, Martian Manhunter has been a Justice League member longer than Batman or Superman.

So if you don't understand why I drew only part of his body, one of his powers is intangibility, so the picture is supposed to be of him phasing through a wall.  That presents an interesting challenge to depict because I had to be more aware of the muscle bulges on his arms and legs and making sure it makes sense when he is phasing.

The other issue was trying to figure out where the cape should go.  Like, how do you show it getting phased through a wall while part of his arm is both in front and behind the cape?  It is hard logistically.

College Comics 21

I am really not sure what inspired me to write this joke.  This maybe one of the more mean-spirited strips that I wrote.

When I am supposed to be working...31

I am actually disappointed by this drawing of Spider-Man.  I mean, it's okay.... but I feel like something is lacking in it.  It might be the pose, it might be the right hand.... There is just something that is unsatisfying about this to me.

When I am supposed to be working...30

I drew this while I should have been paying attention at work.  Man, did I have a lot of time that day.  This is a more detailed picture than normal.  I am quite proud of how it turned out.  This is an example of crosshatching really setting the mood of a picture.

By the by, this is Power Girl, who is supposed to be a more grown up version of Supergirl from an alternate universe.  She also allegedly has the biggest boobs of any superheroine.  Hey.... I don't make this stuff up, I am just reporting what I have heard....
