When I am supposed to be working... 3

Here is a great Thor sketch that I did instead of working at my job. It's hard to tell, but I drew this on binder paper, while using a blue ballpoint pen.

Sometimes  when drawing superheroes, it gives you a bit a license to play with the anatomy a little bit.  That is what I did here with Thor.  When you look at his pose as a whole, it looks very dynamic and action-packed.  However, if you study it, the anatomy is not perfect.  For example, he is technically missing an entire left leg and his right leg is cut below the knee.  But, since it makes sense on a general level-within the context of the rest of the body- people overlook such flaws.

I am currently on something of a Thor high at the moment, since he has a new movie coming out soon. I also just finished reading the first 12 issues of the Thor: God of Thunder comic book, which is easily the most heavy metal comic I've read recently.  When I finished, I had a deep yearning to blast loud rock music and paint the side of a van with skulls and axes.  Do yourself a favor and check out Thor: God of Thunder #1 through 12.

Iron Man Comic Adaptation Page 1

Page 1

In honor of "Iron Man 3"  being released on Blu Ray the other week, I am showing off my comic book adaptation of the first "Iron Man" movie.  I will make some commentary on every page that I post.

This being page one meant that it is not as polished compared to my other later pages.  I actually went back and redid this page at least three time: first pencils, then inking, and finally filling in the areas with blocks of blacks and tightening up the ink job.

Iron Man 3 Mandarin's Voice

I assume that the director told Ben Kingsley that sounding like a ghost = scary, villain voice.
So the other day I bought "Iron Man 3" on Blu Ray.  One of the things that I loved about "Iron Man 3" was how over-the-top Ben Kingsley's Mandarin voice is.  He talks like in a gruff dad tone.  He also alternates between drawing out his syllables and then talking rapidly.  That is really hilarious to me.  It also makes it really fun to quote him with my friends.

When he says that line in the movie trailer, I really thought that the audio on my computer was broken for a moment.

I initially drew this cartoon as a reaction to the trailer.  It is also one the few times that I drew in chibi form.  I drew the lines with a Papermate Flair medium tip marker and filled in the blacks with a fat tip Sharpie marker.

Also, as a bonus, watch the trailer and judge the Mandarin's voice for yourself.

Justice League of Animals 3

Previously, I drew some pictures for the LA Zoo's Comic Jungle event back in June.  Some got used.  Most did not get used.  But you guys are privy to seeing it all.  Notice how Super Rhino has no chest symbol because the LA Zoo logo was later Photoshopped in.

Justice League of Animals 2

Here are the rest of the strips that I wrote and drew for the LA Zoo.  The last strip is more like a series of close ups for the Zoo to use as a Facebook cover page.

So whatever happened to the Justice League of Animals?  I have a story in my head, but now they are secrets that will stay with me to my grave.

Justice League of Animals

A while back, I had an art table at the LA Zoo's Comic Jungle.  Among other things, I helped designed the logo and created a number of zoo animal superhero characters who never made it in the public light.

The LA Zoo was nice enough to give back my drawings that I gave them.  I am grateful for this since I didn't even scan my pictures before I gave them away.  Now I have a chance to show them off!

The LA Zoo wanted me to do a comic strip series starring the animal superheroes that I created.  However, the idea was scraped and my strips were used as a background for the LA Zoo's Facebook cover page.  I wrote and drew a couple of strips, so here are the first strips in their full glory.

I will show the rest of the strips in the next post.  So until then, to be continued....

Animal Man

Animal Man a.k.a. Buddy Baker.  This guy is an old school DC Comics hero who could take on any abilities of an animal.  He underwent a resurgence of popularity in the 80's when notable comics writer Grant Morrison took Animal Man's comic and started writing crazy adventures where Wile E. Coyote is a Jesus archetype and Animal Man drops acid and starts talking to the comic book reader.  Did I mention that Grant Morrison used to do serious drugs?

Anyways, Animal Man was drawn with a G2 gel pen and a fat tipped Sharpie marker.  The animals in the background were drawn with a smaller pen tip- a .01 cm tip pen- to get the fine sketchy details.  It was then shaded over with a dried up Sharpie to give it some depth.

The animal that I like the least in this picture is the snake at the top left corner.  It looks...well...not very snake like.  I don't know what it is.  The picture looked better in my head.

When I am supposed to be working.... 2

Here is another drawing that I did while I was at work.  If these sketches are any indication, I have a lot of free time at my day job.

This is Batman and Superman.  I actually am still debating whether Batman's proportions are off or not.  It was surprisingly hard to get the perspective of his bigger feet coming at you.  Superman, on the other hand, looks fantastic (when does he not?) and I am proud with how he turned out.  If there is something wrong with Superman, it is his unfortunate hand placement in regards to Batman.

Whenever I am at work I draw with a normal blue ball point pen.  I suppose that I really should write notes with the pen, but really, notes are boring in comparison to this.

Movie Madness!!! 6

"Strange things will happen to you soon!"

"The Hangover", "The Matrix", "Teen Witch".... all classics in their own rights.  All are exalted as great movies.  Except for "Teen Witch", which is exalted as a terrible movie.

"Teen Witch" (1989) is about a girl who finds out that she has witch powers and then uses it to become popular.  Among the terrible acting, 80's fashion sense, nonsensical plots, and cheesy one liners, the most egregious problem is that the protagonist does not even learn her lesson!

She abuses her powers to humiliate teachers, mind control famous pop stars, give herself a make over, possibly kill a nerdy kid, and make the popular boy fall in love with her.  There is never that moment where she thinks: "Hm.... this maybe morally wrong to use my powers like this."  It's pretty bad.

On the bright side, it gave the world some of the best songs!!  Wait, let me try that again.... some of the "best" songs!!  It has a rap where the lyrics are all the euphemisms for a penis:

Oh and the other song is the utterly brilliant: "Top That"!!  One day I will learn all of the words to this rap.  I cannot say any more other than, just watch it for yourself:
"Top THAT!!"

What is on my drawing desk today

Here is a sneak peek at an idea that I had in my head.  I will show the completed picture here eventually, but until then....

When I am supposed to be working....

In honor of this past Labor Day, this is what I do when I am at work at my day job. While I don't draw for work, it does give me the opportunity to have some downtime to draw.  I drew this over the course of a week or so.  I covered it up with a bunch of paperwork so prying, more professional eyes don't discover what I am doing.

This is Katniss from Hunger Games.  If you look closely, I actually did not draw her bow correctly.  I originally wanted her bow in front of her body, but I accidentally drew her legs first, so I had to improvise placing the bow behind her.  That is one of the drawbacks of drawing at work with only a blue ball pen, there is little room to make errors.

Movie Madness!!! 5

"There is a tiger in the bathroom!!"

Today's Movie Madness is from "The Hangover" (2009).  It's about four guys going to Las Vegas, getting totally wasted, and then trying to remember the crazy night they had.

I first saw this movie in college, which is probably the perfect age for me.  It's too bad that the second and third ones were not very good (note: I have never seen the second or the third one, but look at the Rotten Tomatoes ratings if you don't believe how terrible they are!).

The picture was done all with a fat tip Sharpie for the bold black lines and a dried up Sharpie for the grey shading.
